Embodying the Virtues of a Proverbs 31 Woman – Jalynn McCown

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done and let her works bring praise at the city gates.”
— Proverbs 31:30-31 (NIV)

When you take a look at Proverbs 31, one can find the characteristics of a Godly, virtuous

woman. There are many attributes listed, so let’s take a deeper look at what it means to be

an inspiring woman of God. First, a Proverbs 31 woman is ultimately God-fearing. She loves

the Lord wholeheartedly and puts Him first in everything that she does. Evidently, this is the

most important aspect of embodying this type of woman. This is demonstrated throughout

the verse.

Next, a Proverbs 31 woman is hardworking. She is someone that is always taking care of

her family and her home. She takes pride in doing so. This type of woman is always looking

for ways to make things run smoothly in her home. When we take a look at the Bible, it

says, “She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her

female servants” (Proverbs 31:15 NIV). This verse demonstrates her hard work and

dedication to her family.

Furthermore, this woman is trustworthy. This type of woman is someone that is dependable

and can be relied upon. This is especially important in the workplace. She must have

integrity and keep her word at all costs. She does not make empty promises. Even with

something so miniscule like promising to read her daughter a bed-time story. She does so

because she said she would.

A proverbs 31 woman is generous. She is someone that is always looking to help others

and give to those in need. She knows that in doing this, she can make a difference in

someone’s life. If you turn to the verse, it says, “She opens her arms to the poor and

extends her hands to the needy” (Proverbs 31:20 NIV). A woman of this spirt doesn’t

hesitate to help someone in need.

Also, she is clothed in beauty. She takes care of herself in all aspects – spiritually,

physically, and mentally. She knows that what’s on the inside, radiates to the outside. In

taking care of herself, she can be a true blessing to others. In the Bible, it says, “She makes

coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple” (Proverbs 31:22 NIV).

Lastly, a Proverbs 31 woman is full of wisdom. She knows right from wrong, and she doesn’t

let anyone persuade her into doing differently. She uses discernment in important situations

to keep her out of trouble. She is a praying woman, who depends on God to provide her

with wisdom and knowledge. Ultimately, she is respected by many.

After reading these attributes, one may question – how can I embody the virtues of a

Proverbs 31 Woman? Well, it’s simple, put your faith and trust in the Lord, and he will guide

you into becoming a better woman for yourself, your family, and your community. As you

deepen your relationship with God, He will influence you in a way that you become like this

type of woman, without even trying. This is evident in Psalm 37:4 (NIV) – “Take delight in

the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Take a moment to reflect and ask

yourself – am I giving my all to the Lord? If not, then continue to open yourself up to Him

and watch how you’ll become a virtuous Proverbs 31 woman.
